Photographer Behind the Lens ~ Sujata {But Natural Photography}

This week we are featuring the amazing Sujata from But Natural Photography as our Photographer Behind the Lens!

Share a little about you...

Well I am 35. I have a girl and a dog... so two kids. Between them and my photography work... I barely get to take a shower in peace, once a month. But its been incredible. I love this little mad world around me. It makes me feel alive. It inspires me.

How did your photography career begin?

I moved from India to the UK around seven years ago and was hunting for a job here for the next five years. When nothing at all clicked, I just one night sat and opened a photography facebook page. Friends always told me my pictures were great (the ones that I took on holiday with an iphone basically... the really bad ones that you look back at and cringe. LOL! Bless by friends. ) So basically two years ago I set up my photography business and I haven’t looked back.

What do you love most about photography?

That its therapeutic. I have had so many people come to me and say that photography has saved their soul from destruction. Photography has been therapy for me too. We build worlds here that we imagine. Imagination is always such a beautiful and safe place to be in. No matter how sad or deeply injured your soul is... imagination is the only place where you can find happiness... and to have the power to turn that imagination into reality with one click... what a blessing that is.

How would you describe your style?

Someone once called my style “magical realism”. It really struck me for the first time that day... what my work means. Until then I just said to everyone “I make routine look fun in my work”... but I guess others see magic in it.

Share with us your all-time favourite image, and why?

Gosh I have just so many but my absolute favorite has to be the one in which my daughter is eating her breakfast and my dog is looking at like almost saying “sis! Sure you don’t need my help?” Hahaha... that really does sum up their relationship for me.

Share a sneak peek inside your camera bag! What is your favourite lens and why?

I am poor photographer. Hhaha. I only have my 135mm f2 (for all outdoor work) and my 50mm f 1.4 for studio work. I love prime lenses. They are just much sharper and they make you move you butt... so if you need to get more of the subject in the frame then move your damn bum instead of zooming.

Share a sneak peek inside your studio.

Aah I used to have a studio once upon a time but now I dont do any studio work so I have finally reclaimed that room in my house and brought my self a super king size bed. Thats going to be our master bedroom now. Yohoo!

What’s inside your editing toolbox? What post processing tools do you love the most?

Photoshop, photoshop and some more photoshop. I only hand edit. no presets and no actions. I love doing my work myself.

For a bit of fun…. share an image from your first paid session and from your most recent session! What has contributed most to your development as a photographer?

Hahaha I wont forgive you for this. LOL! sharing these images with you. My growth... hmm... a lot of time spent learning from the right sources and people and a huge amount of practice. My biggest inspiration has been Elena Shumilova.

What would be your #1 tip that you would give to new photographers?

Please don’t think investing in learning this art isn’t important. Nothing comes for free... knowledge certainly doesn’t.
